Seventeenth century seems to be a time of difficulties for the people of Ireland, as that is the period when invasion, plundering and insulting events that are way beyond explanation has occurred. People, whose forefathers have passed down the details of the events of their own lives, are still able to give written proof of the nightmarish incidents and the effect they had on the lives of their ancestors. After crushing a large number of small rebels in the regions of Ireland, the English had been able to subdue the island and they were able to convert most of the Irish lands into following Catholic ideals.

The inception of the Act of Union between the people of Ireland and England, after the memorable seventeenth century, brought a hopeful improvement in the situations at hand. However, all hopes were quelled by the internal differences between the northern and southern regions of Ireland. All these events had only one reason which was differences in the principles of the Protestants and Catholics in Ireland.

The northern part of Ireland grew steadily into a prosperous region, under the blanket of industrial and manufacturing processes in various fields. But the people of the southern Ireland had to endure more diminishing standards due to uneven distribution of fertile lands among the native and the Anglo Protestants living there. This brought more bloody riots and clashes which did not help the growth of Ireland much. Britain was blamed for this and they were forced into solving this issue by dividing Ireland into northern and southern regions permanently.

During this period, the Catholics wanted complete freedom and this created a much bigger political problem in Ireland for almost four decades. The solution which was chosen for this problem was the inception of the Government of Ireland act in the year 1920, which however did not help the situation much. Guerrilla warfare methods were used by the Irish Republican Army against the troops of British soldiers and this brought about the death of countless Englishmen.

Following these unforgettable events, in the year 1921, the legendary treaty of peace was signed between the 23 southern counties and 3 counties in Ulster of Ireland and was declared independent while 6 counties of Ulster were joined together as the Northern Ireland and were made part of the United Kingdom. Finally, in the year 1949, the independent republic of Ireland was formed and things seemed to have come into control after this for some time.

Ireland had to face more problems in the year from 1960 to 1990 in the form of bloody violence between the Catholics and the Protestants in the land. Intensive armed attacks between the Independent Republican Army and the Protestant paramilitary forces broke out, forcing them to seek help from the British troops again to resolve matters. This brought about the signing of the Anglo-Irish Agreement between the British and the Irish Prime ministers. Following the cease fire from the IRA, the implementation of this treaty was successful in 1994. At last, in 2010, all the governing powers of Irish lands were given back to Ireland, but the echoes of the past still resound once in a while.
